Forty years after the acclaimed presentation of Sigmar Polke’s installationAthanor at the 42nd Venice Biennale, the exhibition Sigmar Polke: The Photographs for Venice Biennale 1986 presents a comprehensive collection of unique photographs. The photographs document the creative process behind the legendary Athanor pavilion project and shed light on its artistic context.

An extensive catalog (180 pages with 106 illustrations), edited by the curators, has been published to accompany the exhibition. In addition to a foreword by art historian Dr. Nina Zenker, the publication features comprehensive analyses by art historian and renowned specialist in German postwar modernism Hubertus Butin, as well as by the distinguished art critic and curator Laszlo Glozer.

Conceived and curated by Dierk Dierking and Gerald Winckler.
